    Great multi-purpose appliance

This is a replacement for a very similar one we had for over 30 years but lost to a house fire. It really is nice to be able to flip the plates and make pancakes or grilled cheese sandwiches on one side or waffles on the other. The only complaint I would have (and it is more of a comment than complaint) is that I would like the waffle side better if it made two large waffles instead of four smaller ones.

We replaced our old Waffle Baker after it finaly died some 35 years later and we love this new one. It works just like the old one use to. We have had no problems with it at all.

The Black & Decker G48TD came highly recommended from Cook’s Illustrated (from a review that is a few years old, so maybe the build has changed.) In any case, the Waffle Iron is “okay”. I’d say 2 1/2 Stars (out of 5.) It does a good job but certainly not great. The browning of waffles, which Cook’s Illustrated raved about being excellent, is not nearly as consistent as an “excellent” rating would suggest. Again, perhaps the build of the Waffle Iron has changed but the circular element under the grills produces good browning in the middle but the edges are definitely not consistently nor nicely browned. If I could have returned after using, I would have but will keep it and work through the inconsistency. Again, it has not produced bad nor unedible waffles but they are not fantastic. In two words: 2 1/2 stars.

Best waffle maker so far, and awesome price!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I make protein waffles and freeze them for a quick breakfast. I wanted to find something big, quick, and easy to clean. I’m busy and I don’t want to spend forever trying to clean an appliance.

This waffle maker is great for my needs!

    PROS:

    - You can remove the plates and soak them for easy cleaning

    - It has two sides so you can do sandwiches as well

    - The plates are non-stick coated so cleaning is even easier (but use something else or it WILL stick)

    - It has an adjustable temp. knob

    - Makes 4 average sized regular waffles (about 4 or 5 inches)

    - Doesn’t auto-lock so batter won’t go over the sides everywhere if it’s homemade with baking powder (they puff up and then fall back down)

    CONS:

    - The outside is HOT, so watch out if you have curious kids or children

    - The non-stick plates collect “gunk” that’s hard to remove completely from spraying non-stick spray on them.

    - It doesn’t open vertical at all so larger sandwiches tend to be pressed at an angle or the bread may slide if there’s cheese on it (just turn every so often to help even it out)

Overall I’m really happy with my purchase. The only way it could be better was if it made MORE waffles at a time and didn’t collect the goo from the cooking spray.

American (not Belgian) waffle maker does really well for us
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
We shopped around for a long time looking for a HQ, non-Belgian (American) waffle maker. We went to department stores, Wal-Mart, Target, etc., and it was hard enough to find a decent non-Belgian iron. On top of that, we found most of the waffle makers – American or Belgian – tended to feel cheap or flimsy.

After some reviews online (and a review in the America’s Test Kitchen cookbook), we finally settled on the B&D G48TD.

The design’s aesthetics are ok. It’s not plastic, and it doesn’t look cheap in appearance. The metal body shell gets fingerprinted very easily, but it looks really nice right out of the box.

The construction doesn’t feel as solid as I’d like. The lid’s hinge – which is designed to open 180 degrees to lay wide open and flat as a grill – feels loose by design, leaving me to wonder if it will last. Also, the knob that controls the heat feels cheap when you turn it. Finally, our particular iron doesn’t lay perfectly flat on our countertop.

However, with all of that said, the cooking surface plates were solid. They are also easy to clean because you can take them out and wash them by hand. Also, you can gently clean out the rest of the body of the iron (when it’s unplugged, of course.) There won’t be any grease or crumb buildup over time in this waffle iron in those hard to reach places.

(Note: The most helpful critical review spoke of snaps that hold the cooking plates in place as hitting each other, so they had to be bent. My waffle iron’s plate clips had no such problem; no adjustment was necessary.)

The best part about this iron is that it cooked our waffles pretty well. Even though this iron has round heating elements, the square waffles that came out were relatively evenly cooked and light brown.

(Note: Turn the heat up to the top of the “Waffles” zone on the knob. Anything but the highest waffle setting will leave you with uneven or softer waffles.)

Bottom Line: This isn’t a commercial-level, $$$$ waffle iron that feels solid as a rock. However, I am generally pleased with its performance and cleanup, so I’m happy with the purchase so far. If it holds up, I’m going to be happy with it over the long haul.

    More notes:

Read the manual before using. You may think that using a waffle iron should be a no-brainer, but reading this manual helped, IMO.

I won’t be using this as a grill/griddle, so I can’t comment on that aspect of this appliance.

Black & Decker G48TD Grill and Waffle Baker
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The Black & Decker Grill and Waffle Baker was exactly what I was looking for. I had the same item for about 29 years and loved using it. When I dropped and broke it I looked at about 50 Waffle Bakers on line and in stores and none met my requirements since I was so happy with my old one. I bought a different one and returned it immediatly because it only cooked the center and the edges were wet and raw. Now my waffles come out perfect. I highly recommed the Black & Decker G48TD Grill and Waffle Baker for its heat settings feature, sleek looks and easy handeling, but most or all for its consistantly perfect cooking results. I rate this item 5 stars.

Waffles cook evenly and do not stick. Clean up is easy with the removable plates.

  8. Patricia Pearson says:

    Works well despite some sticking
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
We’ve had this for a few months now. We were tired of having our oat/wheat waffles sticking to the surface of our old iron. We have not had any sticking up until this week. Waffles can be still removed, but it takes a little work to avoid scratching the cooking surface. Ordinary waffles should have no issues since they have more oil in the mix. Otherwise, waffles turn out light and cooked throughout.

    waffle maker and grill review
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
I was looking for a combination waffle maker and grill with removal plates for easy cleaning and this item met these requirements at a reasonable price.

I made waffles and they turned out great, crisp on the outside and soft and tender on the inside. The only downside is that it takes about 10 minutes to preheat the grill before using.

    This waffle iron is tradional!
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
OMG I cant believe I found this iron! I have been looking for the traditional old fashion waffle iron and this is it! My parents had one sorta like it when I was younger, so I was delighted to find it. The only thing is I wish the style of the iron was more up to date. I wish I could have given it 4 1/2 stars instead of 4. Over all it works fine and waffles came out superb!

    Reliable well tested Waffle Baker
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Pros: Removable plates for thorough cleaning, Stores vertically to save cupboard space, Multi use product.

Cons: Waffles sometime stick without careful greasing of the plates before starting.

We bought this waffle baker as a replacement for the same model that died after many years of use. Removable plates is an absolute necessity as anyone who has ever tried to clean baked on gunk can attest to. There is just no way to easily clean the one piece units when you have an accident.

Not bad, but not great either. Difficult to clean and slides on the counter top when lifting the handle. Handle doesn’t get hot but seems flimsy.

Waffles stick and to cook any thing you have to be on the highest setting.

  14. R. Klein says:

    Poor quality, never worked right
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
We had high hopes as Cooks Illustrated magazine rated this waffle maker as their waffle maker of choice. We were disappointed. The waffle maker has removable cook plates on the top and bottom; one side is for waffles and the other for grilling. A small clip is supposed to hold the plates tight: it never worked. From the moment we opened the box we knew that it was poor design – the clip never held the bottom cook plate in place. We returned the waffle maker without ever using it.

What can I say – this is the ‘gold standard’ of waffle irons. My mom had this same one when I was a kid – and this is my 2nd one as an adult. Frankly, I only replaced my last one because I wanted one shiny & new – there wasn’t a thing wrong with it (I donated it to Good Will). This always makes a great wedding gift – it definitely will get used often and for years to come.

    good grill
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
The product is good. The picture of the machine on some site showed me bigger waffle plates which is why i chose this. However, this one is the regular size machine with 4 waffle makers. Anyway, thats the only thing bothering me. Otherwise its a good machine. The waffles come out very nice.

The Best For The Least $
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Simply put, this is the best waffle maker, the most versital and easyest to clean up for the least money !!! I’ve read some of the other reviews, about the non stick coming off, but if you are carefull and gental, it will last for a long time, as goes with everthing these days. All in all a great product for the money

    B&D Waffle Baker
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Waffle maker worked well, made good tasting waffles and which cooked fast after unit was properly warmed up. Be careful to not use too much batter otherwise it’ll spill over the sides. Clean was easy but you need to get into the grooves to get “baked on” batter. I would definetly recoment this product to others.

like the concept; not so much on performance
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
Loved the idea of combining a waffle maker and a grill/griddle in one appliance. I’m trying to unclutter my kitchen, and keep only things that serve a multi-purpose or will get used all of the time. This item seemed like the solution. It was, briefly. But like some of the other reviewers I had problems with having to crank it up to high, and the waffles still not being browned. I had problems with my waffles sticking (yes, I tried oil, butter, cooking spray- none made a difference), so that when you opened the machine you had 1/2 a waffle on the top, 1/2 on the bottom. You then had to carefully peel both sides off and smoosh them back together to have a waffle. The final straw was when making pancakes on the grill, and the one side was so much hotter that they were burning, and the other side was taking double the time to cook. I had to keep switching the pancakes from side to side to try and even it out. And that was it!!! It was too late to return, and I wouldn’t wish it on the good folks at Good Will, so I consigned it to our township recycling heap. If you want crispy waffles- try the Villa Ware waffle maker. It’s excellent. If you want a grill/griddle, try the Cuisinart Griddler. It’s excellent.

    B & D waffle iron review
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
Was a little smaller than I expected. Does not cook as fast as my 50 year old Sunbeam which I was replacing. Waffles turn out flatter than old one I suppose because it doen’t cook as fast. Wish I had my old Sunbeam back but I can make do with the new one especially since I don’t want a Belgian maker and didn’t want to pay a fortune.

  24. R. Colegrove says:

    Horrible waffle iron
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Don’t buy it. After the first couple of waffles no amount of oil can make it non stick. Also, the clips that hold the iron in place are horribly weak and unsafe. That combination results in either a ripped apart waffle when you open it, or the top iron staying attached to the waffle and since this thing gets so hot you have to wait about 20 minutes until you have to pry it open.

Save your money and buy something else.

    waffle baker
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
This waffle baker was a replacement of a very old waffle baker of the same manufacturer and design that was no long reliable. The new waffle baker does not bake the waffle evenly. One side is under-baked even though the finished light indicates it is ready.

  26. Over 60 says:

    Disappointed
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
We bought this waffle iron based on “America’s Test Kitchen” review, which gave this “iron” top ratings. We bought it on-line because we could not find it sold locally.

Our first waffle was “excellent”, but the next one was slightly less done on the half near the hinges. The third and fourth ones from this batch were unevenly browned and changing the temp setting made no difference.

We waited a week (for our weekend waffle treat) and thought we should give the “iron” a second chance. Total disappointment. By the fourth and final waffle of the day, it was completely “white” when the light went out, indicating it was done. This was on the highest temp setting. (Note: Made in China, of course) Never tried the “Grill” option.

Bottom line: Returned for refund and are looking for a higher end product to purchase locally.

    Happy Mom
    Rating:4 out of 5 stars
My mother had wanted this Black & Decker Grill and Waffle Maker for some time. She was excited to have old fashion waffles and not Belgium’s. Because she has limited space for new gadgets in the kitchen she always hopes for one that has multi-functionality. This matched those requirements. For Christmas we got her the grill and waffle maker, she was thrilled. I was with her for the first use and we took it all apart and washed it, which appeared easy and basic. I have an electric grill that is horrible to clean because the plates don’t come off. This one the plates come off easily. The waffles we made the first time were great! My only critiques are that it seems much less durable then it should. The hinge has a lot of movement in it so it feels cheap. If your main use will be as a grill or you have a large family you may want to find something else, the grill space is small. Mom’s happy with it.. and isn’t that all that counts!?
